King Seiko was created from 1961 to 1975 by Daini Seikosha as an alternative to Suwa Seikosha’s Grand Seiko.

As the successor to the King Seiko J14102, the Daini factory released the second King Seiko from 1964 to 1968, with the earliest release in 1964 having the model number 44999 before switching over to 44-9990.

Like the Grand Seiko line, King Seikos also featured a gold medallion on its case back, a practice that began with the 44KS. An ornate shield with “King Seiko” above it appeared from the first release until around early 1967.

The 44KS here is the King Seiko with the 44999 serial number from May 1964. This 44KS has a stainless steel case measuring 36 x 43 mm lug to lug with a 19 mm lug width. Influenced by Taro Tanaka's Grammar of Design, it features eye-catching fat lugs with large, flat planes and sharp, angled bevels along the outer edge. The all-polished stainless steel case and the tall, flat surface of the acrylic crystal enhance its appearance. The relatively thin bezel gives the watch a larger look on the wrist than its actual size. A relatively big crown with the signed Seiko and W logos also comes in handy when winding the watch.

The dial design represents the trademarks of higher-end 1960s Seiko. The silver sunburst finish dial, the applied faceted steel baton indices, which double for the 12-hour marker with a cross-textured surface, indicate Seiko's attention to detail. The polished dauphine hands, applied Seiko logo, and printed King Seiko logo above 6 o’clock exhibit a unique blend of different fonts and sizes between the King Seiko and Diashock 25 Jewels below. The dateless dial gives the watch a classic, symmetrical look.

The 44A movement is a 25-jewel manual winding caliber rated at 18,000 bph with a hacking function.

The 44999 King Seiko here is a historical Seiko watch that still maintains its great condition after 60 years of existence. It has a clean dial and case, an intact gold shield medallion on the case back, and runs with normal accuracy and a good power reserve of more than 24 hours when fully wound.
