Before ceramic and sapphire are used as scratch resistance material in watches, Seiko experimented with tungsten carbide in the 1980s in their high-end Dolce range and a limited Grand Seiko SBGT009 in 1988.
The tungsten carbide has a hardness of 2600Hv which is harder than sapphire and only second to diamond.
The difficulties of engineering and machining requirements are why no tungsten carbide watch is produced today, making the Seiko Dolce tungsten carbide series a rare watch and worth collection.
This Tank Dolce circa 1987 features a two-tone case with silver outer and gold inner tank, white roman dial, and one of the Seiko Dolce range that has the second hand. A classic beautiful two-tone case tank design for collection.
While the watch is in good working condition, it does exhibit a noticeable blemish on the top right and center-right of the dial that becomes visible under specific lighting conditions. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive vintage timepiece suitable for various formal dinner occasions.
With proper care and maintenance, the watch's case is expected to maintain its crisp appearance, remaining nearly free from scratches and signs of wear for the foreseeable future.
