The 45GS family of hi-beat manually wound watches debuted in 1968, a year after its iconic sibling, the 44GS, which introduced Grand Seiko's signature design language. Produced by Daini Seikosha between 1968 and approximately 1973, the 45GS shares a close visual relationship with the 44GS, embodying the aesthetic principles of Taro Tanaka's Grammar of Design.

The standout feature of the 45GS is its hi-beat frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, driven by a manual-winding caliber produced by Daini Seikosha. There are two variants of the 45GS: the date version, 4522A, and the no-date version, 4520A. The watch presented here is the no-date 4520-8000, from the inaugural year of production in 1968.

The GS 4520-8000 is favored for its design, featuring a case influenced by the 44GS but slightly smaller at 36.5mm. Its classy white dial, devoid of a date window, exudes balance and aesthetic appeal. Simple Seiko and GS Hi-beat logos adorn the dial, complemented by dauphine hands and stick indices. This gives the 4520-8000 a minimalist classic look befitting a high-end mechanical watch of its era.

In great condition with a recently serviced movement, this watch demonstrates good accuracy with a variance of +/- 10 seconds per day and has a long power reserve. Although there are minor signs of wear, such as slight marks on the side of the dial and beside the 5-hour indices, the case retains its excellent condition and the sharpness of the Taro Tanaka design, with the clean gold coin back case serving as a highlight of its pristine condition since its production in 1968.
