The King Seiko lineup was initially developed by the Daini Seikosha division as a luxury hand-wind watch to rival the Suwa-developed Grand Seiko line. However, the first automatic King Seiko was actually developed by Suwa Seikosha. The high-beat 56 series calibre, which powered this early automatic King Seiko, went on to drive a diverse range of King and Grand Seiko models, becoming arguably Seiko’s most successful automatic movement.

The Seiko 5626 was initially introduced in 1968 with a different case design, featuring a monobloc type with an external regulator, stubbier, multi-surfaced lugs, and gold case-back medallions. However, by 1971, the design changed, with the external regulator dismissed and the monobloc gold case-back medallions replaced with a screwback case devoid of medallions, yet maintaining a shape nearly identical to the previous monobloc model.

The Seiko 5626-7113 presented here is a late model produced in 1974. It boasts a case assembled according to the Taro Tanaka Grammar of Design, with a white sunburst dial complemented by simple stick indices and dauphine hands. The 5626 calibre is a high-grade automatic movement beating at 28,800 bph and features a quickset day-date function.

Despite its 50-year lifespan, this watch runs with good accuracy of +/- 10 seconds per day and has a robust power reserve. While showing a few signs of wear, such as a small light stain on the left side of the day-date window frame and a replaced mineral crystal, the overall condition of the watch remains good, preserving its polished sharp case design.
